Bowness to grassmere via; hilltop farm, Hawkshead, Low Wray, Skelwith, Great Langdale.
We took this route as it would take us through main villages, to hilltop farm- Beatrix Potter's house- and to Grassmere where William Wordsworth lived. we could then see where Wordsworth's inspiration came from, living with it's beautiful landscape.
In addition we also needed to speak to a vicar but none must live within the lake district as when we were in Great Langdale we tried to find the vicar n the parish at St Mary's but he was nowhere to be seen. so we carried on through several other villagfes and nto to grassmere which has 2 churches. yet there was no sign of a vicar. we even tried the vicarage much to our disappointment and then the phone number for the vicar but there was no answer. feeling rather fed up and hungry we gave up our search for a vicar and turned to a search for food.
after some food we decided to try a different project, a local recipe. so having an excuse to go into grassmeres gingerbread shop we queued up. after buying lots of gnigerbread (which was rather tasty) we asked if we could leran the recipe for our project. we got a simple sharp no as a reply. so that was 2 challenges that had proved far too much trouble for what they were worth.
thankfully earlier on in the journey we had completed another. having a nice chat with some locals.
we walking along the road when a car stopped at a T-junction, we were all looking and wondering if they were lost or something.
after asking it turned out they weren't they said, ' we've been coming up here for the last 30yrs, we just stop off for a quick cup of tea.'
'oh' we replied
seeing our neckers they then asked, 'what are you scouts up to?'
'we are completing our chief scout award' we responded, 'we've walked from bowness and we're going to finish at grassmere.'
'oh, we live in kendal, we've lived their for 49yrs.'
'so what do you like so much about this area then?' we asked them
'it's just so peaceful and tranquil, we've brought my sister in-law up to take a look at the view, get somefresh air and have a cup of good yorkshire tea.'
Pikey whispered that he thought they would have 3 deck chairs in the boot. sure enough after saying our farewells the deck chairs appeared from the boot.
